Archetypes, Amps and Masteries in FC 27

Alongside the new world The Grounds, EA Sports FC 27 also introduces noticeable changes to the systems that define how a Pro is customized. Two new elements are being added: Amps and Masteries. These terms refer to enhancements and proficiencies that are becoming part of the Clubs experience for the first time.
The starting point: More flexibility in the core setup
There is positive news here. All 13 archetypes are available from the outset and no longer need to be unlocked or purchased. In addition, an archetype can now be reset free of charge, without requiring coins or a reset consumable.
Another new feature allows individual attributes to be adjusted selectively instead of resetting the entire build for every change. These adjustments can be made directly from the in-world menu, the clubhouse, or even within active Clubs and Rush lobbies.
The 13 archetypes themselves retain their core concepts and continue to be inspired by real players. However, one new archetype has been added. The Disruptor, inspired by midfield enforcer Roy Keane, replaces Engine, which was available in FC 26.
The archetypes available in FC 27 are as follows: Shot Stopper and Sweeper Keeper in goal, Progressor, Boss and Marauder in defense, Disruptor and Recycler as well as Maestro and Creator in defensive and attacking midfield roles, and Spark, Magician, Finisher and Target in attack.
Each archetype continues to feature its own base attributes, signature playstyles and specializations. In addition to these foundations, FC 27 introduces tuning adjustments across all existing archetypes, although their full impact will only become clear after the complete release.
Amps: Temporary boosts regardless of position
Amps are consumable items that grant additional benefits to the active archetype for a limited number of matches, such as a plus one increase to acceleration or strength. They are divided into two categories and four tiers.
Standard Amps include tier one attribute boosts and tier two stronger attribute boosts.
Signature Amps, inspired by real football icons, include tier three stronger attribute boosts alongside playstyles and perks, and tier four stronger attribute boosts with playstyles plus and perks.
An Amp can be used independently of the player’s position and can therefore unlock abilities that are not tied to the current role. EA provides the example of a Signature Amp inspired by John Arne Riise, which grants Power Shot Plus, reflecting the former Norwegian left back’s well known shooting power. Up to three Amps can be equipped at the same time, consisting of two Standard Amps and one Signature Amp. They apply in all stadium matches as well as in the Rush mode within the open world.
Amps are time limited and can be earned through objectives, live events, campaigns and seasonal progression in The Grounds and in Clubs. Additional Amps are also expected to be available directly in the in game shop. Since new Amps will be introduced over the course of the live service and tied to specific campaigns, the selection is likely to change regularly throughout the season.
Masteries: Long term progression across all builds
Masteries are designed to represent long term development as a complete footballer. For each developed archetype, permanent attribute boosts can be unlocked at defined milestones. These bonuses apply to all builds, regardless of which archetype is currently active.
The following overview shows which attributes receive permanent upgrades for each archetype. At level 10, both listed attributes increase by one point, while at level 30 only the second attribute increases by one point.
Shot Stopper: goalkeeper positioning, goalkeeper reflexes
Sweeper Keeper: goalkeeper handling, goalkeeper diving
Progressor: long passing, standing tackles
Boss: aggression, strength
Marauder: sliding tackles, sprint speed
Disruptor: stamina, interceptions
Recycler: defensive awareness, short passing
Maestro: reactions, ball control
Creator: free kick accuracy, vision
Spark: crossing, dribbling
Magician: curve, acceleration
Finisher: composure, finishing
Target: balance, jumping
Since Masteries apply across archetypes, it is beneficial to develop multiple archetypes at least to their key milestones, even if only a select few are used regularly in matches. Combined with the introduction of free resets, the barrier to experimenting with different archetypes is significantly lower than in the previous title.
What this means for build strategies
Overall, the build system in FC 27 shifts away from a one time, high impact decision at the start of the yearly cycle toward a structure that rewards active experimentation. All archetypes are immediately available, resets are free, individual attributes can be adjusted with precision, and progress in one archetype contributes permanently to all others through Masteries.
Amps add a flexible, time limited layer to builds, enabling unconventional combinations of abilities, such as a physically dominant striker using an Amp typically associated with defenders.
At this stage, it is not yet possible to establish a reliable meta ranking of which archetypes perform best in specific positions. The public beta has only been running since early August, the full release is scheduled for September 25, 2026, and the announced tuning adjustments may still shift the balance compared to recommendations known from FC 26.
As more matches are played under the initial balancing conditions, community discussions around specific build recommendations are expected to evolve quickly. A first hands on report from gamescom is already available in the news section.
